Greece: The Detention Centres for Migrants are given to private security companies

The Minister of Public Order has given the green light for the privatisation of the Detention Centres for Migrants.

The public tender, which will be completed this month, concerns the Detention Centres for Migrants in Corinth, Drama and Orestiada. The price reaches 15 million per year.

The tender includes special training in the National Police training centres for the private guards, whereas the activities of the private companies will be complementary to the work of the Police. Nevertheless, the main reason for this decision to privatise the Detention Centres is the limited possibilities of the Police in these areas, due to lack of forces.

For the first sub-contract, that of the Detention Centre in Corinth, the total amounts to €5,273,520 and involves 86 people. Accordingly, for the one in Drama the cost will amount to €4,415,040 per year, with 72 guards, while for Orestiada the amount is €2,422,140 for 79 people.

The funding is provided by grants from the Public Investment Programme and the EC Return Fund.
