* Ester Quintana is the protester that last year lost her eye after an attack by the police in Barcelna during the protest of 14N [1]. That day, a little before nine pm, as Ester returned home with some friends having taken part in a legal demonstration held in support of the national strike, a projectile shot by a member of the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan autonomous police force) hit her in the face, causing serious injury including the loss of her left eye, several bone fractures around the eye socket and of her cheekbone and jaw, as well as other damage to her nose and mouth.

This is how my face looks after the brutal attack that I suffered, due to the impact of a rubber bullet shot by Mossos d’Esquadra [2], on the 14N.

15 days ago I had an operation in order to get an implant in the place that my left eye used to be. After 3 operations, the recovery and the convalescence that I had to deal with have been really, really painful, I can tell you.

In the last 7 months I’ve found out that I’m a strong and brave person, more than I thought, although the physical and psychological recovery is too slow, from my point of view.

I still need more operations, but the number and the extent are still to determine and I just can’t see the end of all this process. I wouldn’t want anyone to suffer as I am suffering now.

Hatred, resentment and rage are words and feelings that I know but I try to keep out of the dictionary of my soul. The ones that I keep are responsibility, forgiveness, equality, justice, courage, friendship, solidarity, truth, freedom, serenity…

For all these reasons and many more we are still fighting for the abolition of the rubber bullets… KEEPANEYEONYOUREYE

Ester, the last victim!

[1] 14N refers to November 14, when there a general strike took place in Spain. Many demonstrations took place all around the country with thousands of people asking the Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, to review the brutal cuts to the budget. There were over a hundred detentions and many injured due to vicious police crackdown.
